Why does an individual/company need a domain name?
In this day and age, a company's performance and success is measured by how visible it is in the various markets in which it transacts its business.
With the turn of the century, there has been an unsurmounted increase in the amount of business that occurs on the internet. Companies and individuals are establishing themselves on the internet in an attempt to tap this market.
A domain is a unique identifier of a specific website - for example: akooka.com, akooka.co.za, ipresence.co.za. All of these names are unique to the company/individual that has registered them for a set period of time. At the end of this period, one must make a decision whether to pay the relevant fees and retain registration for the domain.
As long as the domain is registered to a specific entity, no other individual or company may register this domain and use it for their own purposes.
When a website is to be established, a domain name is required. However, the converse is not true - when one registers a domain name, one does not need to setup a website if they are not ready. So even if you are not intending to establish a website at the moment, register the domain name which represents your company to prevent others from registering it first.
